There are three core certification levels:

• Basic (CET-1) — Foundational knowledge: safety, tools, electrical basics, preventive maintenance, documentation, and equipment fundamentals.
• Advanced (CET-2) — Builds on Basic: advanced diagnostics, troubleshooting complex faults, control systems, and service documentation at a professional level.
• Master (CET-3) — Elite credential for experienced technicians: systems-level diagnosis, leading teams, advanced electrical work, and mastery of the full equipment lifecycle.

All six Specialist courses (Cardio, Strength, Installation, PM, Refurbishment, and Equipment Assembler) may be purchased individually or together in the $899 Specialist Course Package (approximately 40% off the $1,494 individual total). Equipment Assembler may be purchased ahead, but CET-1 coursework must be completed and its final exam passed before Assembler coursework can be started or unlocked. Each completed Specialist course contributes 3 cumulative hours toward the minimum hour requirement for CET-1, CET-2, or CET-3 certification.

1. Create your account — Register for free at NCFET.com.
2. Enroll in a track — Choose the certification level appropriate for your experience.
3. Complete the online coursework — Work through all learning modules at your own pace.
4. Log your service hours — Document verified hands-on experience with fitness equipment (required hours vary by track). Work orders count for credit, and hours logged for any additional NCFET course you enroll in may be applied toward a previous course's hour requirement.
5. Pass the final written exam — A proctored multiple-choice knowledge exam.
6. Complete the practical assessment when required — Submit video or documented evidence of performed procedures reviewed by NCFET graders.
7. Receive your digital credential — After all requirements are met, your credential is issued and publicly verifiable.

The Basic certification coursework covers:

• Workplace safety, PPE, and LOTO (Lockout/Tagout) procedures
• Basic electrical theory: voltage, current, resistance, circuits, and meters
• Hand and power tool identification and proper use
• Fitness equipment categories and key components (treadmills, bikes, ellipticals, rowers, strength equipment)
• Mechanical systems: drive systems, belts, rollers, bearings, and lubrication
• Preventive maintenance procedures and scheduling
• Fundamental diagnostics: reading error codes, using a multimeter, and isolating common faults
• Professional service documentation and work order practices
• Customer communication and service professionalism

Most candidates complete the Basic certification within 4 to 8 weeks, depending on their starting knowledge level and how much time they can dedicate each week.

• Online coursework: active learning time is tracked on your dashboard; timed exams do not count toward this total
• Cumulative hours: the minimum requirement varies by track and may include online coursework and approved field work
• Exam preparation: we recommend at least one full pass through all practice exams before attempting the real exam
• Practical assessment: submission and review typically takes 5–10 business days when required for the track

Candidates who already have hands-on experience in the field often complete faster. There is no maximum time limit — you proceed at your own pace.

Your dashboard shows a running total of active online learning time accumulated across all NCFET coursework, including courses you have completed and any additional courses you start. Time spent taking timed module, final, or renewal exams is excluded from the online course-hour total.

The total online course hours are separate from approved employer work-order or service-hour credits. Both types of learning credit may contribute toward the minimum hours required for a certification when the applicable track policy allows it.

You can either start another NCFET course to accumulate the minimum number of hours required, or submit signed on-the-job work orders from your employer to receive credit toward the learning hours needed to meet the minimum requirement.

If a work order does not have labor time listed, NCFET usually gives credit equivalent to 1 hour of educational work for each work order submitted. All work orders must be approved by an NCFET administrator or instructor to receive credit.

• Basic (CET-1) — 24 months from the date your credential is issued
• Advanced (CET-2) — 24 months from the date your credential is issued
• Master (CET-3) — 24 months from the date your credential is issued
• Specialist tracks — Lifetime, provided you maintain an active Basic NCFET credential
• Inspector — Lifetime, provided you maintain an active Master NCFET credential

Before expiry of core tracks, you must complete a recertification process (continuing education and/or a recertification exam) to maintain active credential status. Expired credentials are visible but flagged as inactive in the verification system. Specialist and Inspector credentials become inactive automatically if the required prerequisite credential lapses.

Upgrading your level resets the clock: If you earn a higher-level certification (e.g., advancing from Basic to Advanced, or Advanced to Master), your expiration date is automatically set to 24 months from the date you complete and pass that higher-level certification — not from your original Basic credential issue date.

When you successfully complete and pass a higher NCFET certification level, your new credential's expiration date is automatically calculated as 24 months from the date you pass — regardless of when your previous credential was issued or when it was set to expire.

For example:

• You earned your Basic (CET-1) in January 2024 — it expires January 2026.
• You pass the Advanced (CET-2) in September 2025.
• Your Advanced credential is issued with an expiration date of September 2027 — a fresh 24-month window from the date you completed the upgrade.

This policy rewards technicians who invest in advancing their credentials. There is no penalty for upgrading early, and your credential clock resets fully with each level earned.

For the core courses, yes. You may purchase any course upgrade at any time, but you must complete every CET-1 online module and pass the CET-1 final exam before accessing CET-2 or CET-3 coursework.

The five original Specialist tracks (Cardio, Strength, Installation, PM, and Refurbishment) may be purchased and started at any time. Equipment Assembler Specialist may also be purchased ahead of time, individually or in the $899 six-course Specialist package, but it cannot be started or unlocked until you complete CET-1 coursework and pass the CET-1 final exam. The Ultimate all-course package still contains only the five original Specialist tracks. The Inspector credential has separate requirements shown on its track page.

If you do not pass the final exam on your first attempt, you are immediately eligible for one re-test. No waiting period is required. You can go back into the exam portal and attempt the exam again right away.

The second attempt uses a different version of the exam drawn from the same question pool.

If you do not pass on the second attempt, you will be required to return to the course material and complete a mandatory remediation review. After completing the remediation review, there is a mandatory 1-week waiting period before you may attempt the exam again.

After the waiting period, you will receive two new exam attempts — an attempt and one immediate re-test — following the same rules as the original attempt pair.

This cycle repeats as needed. NCFET believes in supporting candidates through the learning process, not gatekeeping — but the material must be mastered before the credential is earned.

NCFET does not have a general tool store, but we do offer a discounted swage crimping tool and cable cutter set for enrolled technicians who need the specialty tools required for the Advanced (CET-2) cable assembly assessment. If you are interested, indicate this when submitting your Advanced practical assessment and an NCFET staff member will follow up with pricing and ordering details.

For general hand tools, most technicians source from brands like Milwaukee, DeWalt, Wera, Knipex, Snap-on, or Craftsman — available through hardware stores, tool suppliers, or online retailers. Quality tools will outlast cheap alternatives and are a worthwhile investment for a long career in equipment service.

Yes. If you do not have access to gym cable stock to complete the cable assembly portion of the Advanced (CET-2) practical assessment, NCFET can mail you the materials — the raw cable and end hardware needed to fabricate one complete custom gym cable.

You will still need to provide your own swage crimping tool and cable cutters. If you do not have these, ask about the discounted tool set at the same time. Simply check the appropriate boxes when submitting your Advanced practical assessment through your dashboard, and an NCFET team member will reach out to coordinate.
